While the Steam Machine is a cool piece of hardware, it is way more expensive than we'd like. Which is why we're going to take that budget and build a better PC. For our CPU, we've gone with the Ryzen 5 7500F. It has six Zen 4 cores, just like the Steam machine, but they run in a higher power profile and have more cache for slightly better performance. For memory, we've gone with a 16 gig kit of DDR5 6,000 mega transfer per second. Storage is expensive these days, so we went with the most affordable 512 gig drive we could find. Choosing a motherboard is more about the feature set than it is about performance. So, you're going to want to find the chipset and features you like and sort by price. We actually got one of these for free bundled with our motherboard. We are really happy with our choice for our GPU. It's a desktop version rather than a mobile version and it has twice the VRAM. For our case, we went with this and a power supply and we succeeded. In demanding games like Expedition 33, you can plainly see the difference in the smoothness of the gameplay. We're running at about 60 FPS on our vapor contraption, while the Steam Machine is sitting closer to 35 to 40. And those results hold true across a pretty wide variety of
